Ah, Saturday, Saturday.....

I love Saturdays - especially after school has begun... the ONE day a week I don't have to get up to an alarm clock blinking my lights, buzzing obnoxiously while shaking my bed at 1 second intervals (in time with the obnoxious buzzing and light blinking)... {Note - I am hearing impaired, remember - and if not for that specially adapted alarm, this girl would NOT be waking up in the morning until I got good and ready!}

Let's see - on my agenda today - cousins coming out to the country so Jenn and Kari's girls can play some (and one boy, too, but baby Eli is a bit to young to hang with the girls just yet)... then they are taking Mamaw (my mom, who lives with us) to lunch. After that I hope to finish a project involving an oil drip pan and vinyl along with a few magnets, and make a changing table pad for one of our classrooms at school - and at some point make Katie's birthday card (my baby will be 25 on Monday - she was just a baby yesterday, I'll swear!) and wrap her presents. I don't think she reads my blog, but just in case - not telling!

What do you have planned?

Convention is ON and that marks the approach of our final fun and festivities! August will be here before we know it!

You probably arrived here from:

Creative Designs by Jackie ~ http://jackielwatson.blogspot.com
This blog hop is about Non-Card items. When I signed up, I was thinking, “Nanc, what ARE you thinking??? What do you do that isn’t a card?!!?” Well, I must have thought it (or would that be thunk it ;) aloud, because I was informed that I made lots of non-card things (albeit, not all Stampin’ Up! type things)...

Here is one of those things, from the annals of Nanc!
Click on the pictures for a bigger look ;)

Fern pot for mother's day
Now this was done several years ago – it was a Mother’s Day gift for my mom (wonder what happened to that when we moved her out here with us?). I purchased the pot at a local store, and stamped it using a SU flower stamp and acrylic paint. After it dried completely, I sealed the stamped part with a spray sealer – easy-peasy.

A similar craft would be the tiles I have made a kajillion or two of.

P2120013

These are a few of my favorite. Even though “Long-stemmed” is long retired. I loved these so much that after giving away or selling that set, I bought myself a new set of it off some online auction purchasing site so I could make some more of them! These were stamped with Stazon inks (the only one we now sell is the Jet Black and the White, but we previously had colors, and I still have them, use them and have added to them Smile).

Addendum: I've been asked my process, and since these are still gorgeous after NINE years of use, as I made them my first year as a demo, here it is!
1. Wipe tile dust off with clean shop towel (or any kind of towel you have hanging around).
2. Stamp your stamp choices on a 4x4 square to get your layout in mind, then, using Stazon Jet Black ink, stamp your tiles with your design. (Note - the Christmas trees above were stamped in a Stazon green - forest, I believe, and the leaf/square were stamped in Olive Stazon and an medium brown).
3. Color your designs. Mine are colored using an old, gnarly set of blender pens (that are no longer good for ANYTHING else!). I squish the clear cover in the Stazon pads or the lids in Brilliance ink pads to get a little puddle of ink in the lid/cover. Then I pick up the ink with the blender pen (they are each marked by color - red, orange, yellow/white, blue, green, purple) and sparingly add color where I want it.
4. Stamp your sentiment - I always do this last for some reason, but you can do it sooner if you like. It is your tile, and I am NOT the Stampin police ;).
5. THEN, I bake them in a 350* oven for 30 minutes, and place in a child free zone to cool when done.
6. When completely cool, I mask the non-stamped areas and lightly spray my stamping with a Matte Sealer from that craft store that closes on Sunday (which I love - both the goods and the ethics they have!).
7. Finish it off by adhering a 4x4 ish (mine are about 3 3/4 or so square) piece of cork on the bottom. That same store has them pre-cut or you can buy a roll of cork (more cost effective) and cut them with your tabletop cutter  (no lie!).
8. When selling in craft fairs I stack four together and tie with rough twine and use the tag punch to cut out the price and tie in with the twine. I cross the twine on the bottom and tie a knot in it on the top so folks can pick it up by that knot.
If that isn't clearer than mud, you know where to find me - comment or email me your question :)
(The only set of tiles I've ever done this way that faded were given to the mother of a stamper after she made them in class, and the mother left them out on the patio in high summer, high in the mountains of Colorado... mine have been kept in sunny places with no discernible fading, but just be warned. If you keep them outside, cover them or turn them over, or the ink may bleach out :).

Whew!

A more contemporary product that I am so glad I made for a friend was this envelope album. It took very little time to make – in fact, it took longer to get her wedding pictures than it did to make and embellish this with a Simply Scrappin’ kit.
P8180024P8180025
P8180034
This is viewed from over the top, lol – so it’s kind of upside down…. but you get the gist of it! This is a really fun project! (The instructions are way too lengthy to put here, so if you want them, request it, and that will be a follow-up blog post :).

My very most favorite non-card thing to make, though, is….

can you guess….?

If you know me, you know that my favorite thing to craft is…

SCRAPBOOK PAGES and SKETCHES!!!!!!

Like this:
Scrapbook page June class 2012

and this:
popsicle layout

and sketches like this one, which is perfect for (dare I say it) the First Day of school!:

First day owl in freehand tree

Sorry for saying the “s” word… you know…. (escuela). Anyway, the tree was handcut by me and stamped with the woodgrain stamp. Of course, now I would emboss it with the new woodgrain folder that we are getting on page 33 of the Holiday Catalog...just sayin'

VC~ROCKS! Blog Hop #2, 2012…

Welcome to the second installment of the 2012 VC~Rocks blog hopping!
This weekend I have some cards for your viewing pleasure that were recently made with my stampers. These cards were cased or inspired by other stampers unless otherwise noted. If I know where I saw it, I share… otherwise, I have to beg forgiveness because I have no idea exactly where I saw these ideas on the web. (If you do, please share :).
First up:
DSC00752
This “Thank you” or “Congratulations” card was so easy to make! I used two different Sizzix (by SU) embossing folders: Elegant Lines (119277) and Square Lattice (119976) to emboss the Not Quite Navy Square and the Very Vanilla strip that is under the Crumb Cake taffeta ribbon. I stamped the “Home is wherever I’m with you” (Forever with You stamp set – 126727 Clear) design (hidden by the For You piece ) and hand cut it out. The designer paper is from the COMFORT CAFÉ (126898) and is cut at 5.25X4. The card base is a piece of 8.5x5.5 Midnight Muse, one of the brand new In-Colors! Midnight Muse and Not Quite Navy  (aka NQN) coordinate *well* together!!! The Very Vanilla piece is @ 1.5x4, the NQN square is @ 2.75x2.75. Also on the card front are another stamped piece, using the Midnight Muse new-style ink pad (as was the Home is stamp). We then cut it out by placing the Apothecary Accents Framelit (127003) on top of the stamped cardstock (cutting side down) on a piece of magnet sheet to hold it in place, and ran it through my Big Shot. Very easy to place that correctly doing it that way. The final piece here is a brad from the Antique Brads (117273).
CUTTING TIP – Cut the straight lines at the corners first – from outside into the joint where the curve starts. Then, turning the cardstock into the scissors, cut the curve from point to point. Take it from this former school Art teacher, turn the cardstock or paper into your scissors to cut… don’t move the scissors around the paper – you’ll just cut better and more easily!
My second card is an older one that I just love Smile
DSC00755
I used Crumb Cake cardstock, Not Quite Navy cardstock  punched with the scallop edge punch, and retired brown stripe wide grosgrain (loved that stuff!). We made this card sometime back, but I think I never shared it!
We also used the Four Frames (123442 Clear) stamp set and Soft Suede ink (I stamped and then punched with the Decorative Label – 120907 – punch). If you look closely you can see that the pearl appears to be colored – I used my NQN marker and colored the pearl (page 175 in the new catalog), and allowed it to dry a bit. Then I used a tissue to buff it a bit, but it still retains the NQN essence stain on it – love the look!. Finally, I also used retired DSP (but it wasn’t retired when I used it, honest!). I used Stampin’ Dimensionals (104430) to raise up the label piece.
My final card is one based on a sketch I’ve seen several times, using colors that caught my attention when I saw a similar card online – I changed it very slightly.
DSC00758
This card was made at my May “So long, farewell” meeting…. I’m so sad to see these go – again with the wide striped grosgrain (sniffle) which in this case I cut in half lengthwise and allowed to fray a bit. Then – oh this is SO simple – I stamped the spiral from Trendy Trees (retired) in Real Red, Pumpkin Pie and Daffodil Delight, punched them with my 1 1/4 square punch and placed them on a strip of Pumpkin Pie cardstock. Mounted all of it on Daffodil Delight cardstock cut 4.25x11 and called it macaroni… er DONE!
(The cards are photographed on a flower arranging frog – my elder daughter, Kari, found this one in an antique shop and bought it for me – isn’t it cool??!?!?!)

VCRocks–First blog hop of the season! Have a heart!!!

Welcome to our first blog hop this year!

Here is my offering for this hop:

Just like one can’t eat ONE of a certain brand of potato chip, I can’t share only one scrapbook page with a heart in it!

First – this is Emma, born 1-3-2011 – my second granddaughter… and Em being held by her mom, me, my husband, and my other daughter…

Here is Emma again – back in the fall of 2011 – I did this page and the one of Em’s older sister Ava (my 1st grand) below back in February using the Heart Framelits (love those things!). The sentiment was printed from MDS in Soft Suede to match the background….

DSC00535 smaller

And here, we have Ava – and my messy desk because, honestly – this is how I roll – I’m a messy crafter and proud of it, lol!

To continue on in this blog hop, hop on to stop 20 Scrappin' For Sanity …. and in case you missed anyone, or run into a broken link, here is the whole list for this hop! Thanks for stopping by, and for leaving a comment!

A word for the New Year...

Did you miss me? I hope so!!! I missed you - last year got so crazy in the second half, with lots of hospital visits by our youngest... hopefully we are now on the right track with her to stay in good health for her final semester of undergraduate college studies (before she heads for law school).

One of the blogs I read faithfully is called "The Generous Wife"... I have linked to this, because today's post really hit a spot with me.

In her post today, on January 3 (my grandbaby Emma's first birthday, by the way), she mentions a project for choosing One Word instead of a resolution (or a bunch of them) that you won't keep anyway.

As part of accountability... I wanted to share my one word with you, friends, because it is important.....

my one word is....

Beauty.

Yeah.... beauty. I don't mean well made-up, fancily dressed slenderly elegant ladies... I mean ReAL beauty - the kind that God instilled in us when He created us in His image.

I prayed after I read her post this morning that God would lead me to THE word.... and He faithfully did so! I was feeling a bit down this morning for a couple of reasons, and I got in my car with my favorite radio station turned UP (www.ksbj.org - you can listen on the web - noncommercial Contemporary Christian music - check it out!!!) and the first song that came on was "Beautiful" by Mercy Me.

Written with their daughters in mind, and how the world tries to push surface, artificial standards of beauty on us, this song has a deeper message - God sees such beauty in me (and you!) that He sent His Son to die for me (and you!). We have a fight with our spouse or a friend, we get criticized at work or school, and we feel like it's all over, but God says, "You are beautiful".

I want to see that kind of beauty in others. I want to proactively look for it, even in those who drive me the craziest.

Beauty - that's my word for the year (and hopefully thereafter) and that's my prayer.

How about you? Got a word for this year that you want to make your own instead of the usual "eat right, get more sleep, exercise more" futility?

Let me know YOUR word.... and in the meantime, don't forget - you are beautiful!

Nanc

LINKS:

Days will come when you don't have the strength,
When all you hear is "you're not worth anything"
Wondering if you ever could be loved,
And if they truly saw your heart, they'd see too much

You're beautiful, You're beautiful,
You are made for so much more than all of this
You're beautiful, You're beautiful,
You are treasured, you are sacred, you are His,
You're beautiful

I'm praying that you have the heart to fight,
'Cause you are more than what is hurting you tonight
For all the lies you've held inside so long,
They are nothing in the shadow of the cross

You're beautiful,You're beautiful,
You are made for so much more than all of this
You're beautiful,You're beautiful,
You are treasured, you are sacred, you are His,
You're beautiful

Before you ever took a breath, long before the world began
Of all the wonders He possessed, there was one more precious
Of all the earth and skies above, you're the one He madly loves
Enough to die

You're beautiful, You're beautiful
In His eyes
You're beautiful
You were meant for so much more than all of this
You're beautiful
You are treasured you are sacred you are His
You're beautiful, You're beautiful
You were meant for so much more than all of this
You're beautiful, You're beautiful
You are treasured you are sacred you are His.
